Where is 'Tambunan'?

Tambunan is a district in the Upper Interior Region of Sabah that sits in-between two mountain ranges, namely the Crocker Range and the Trusmadi Range. The district covers 134,679 hectares or 520 square miles of land, consisting of 7 mukims or 88 villages and one township, and with the population of 36,297 people as of the 2010 national census.

What makes Tambunan District unique from other districts in Sabah is that it houses a variety of natural treasures such as rare plants, one of them being the world’s biggest flower which is the Rafflesia. In fact, Tambunan has four of the world’s seven species of Rafflesia and is also home to the pitcher plant locally known as Kukuanga or its scientific name nepenthes xtrusmadiensis which can only be found on Mount Trusmadi, the second tallest mountain in Malaysia. Not only that, Mount Trusmadi is also home to the world’s smallest orchid: the Corybas orchid. So, in terms of natural wonders, one can discover nature’s largest and smallest right here in Tambunan.
